THIS WEEK IN DIGITAL LEARNING

Adding Rubrics to Google Classroom

I'm going to kick off the new year with a Google Classroom feature that has been around for a while, but maybe you haven't had a chance to check it out or see how it works. Google Classroom Rubrics!

If you are already using rubrics to assess students' work, it will save you a TON of time to integrate those rubrics into your Google Classroom assignments!

You may have noticed when you are creating assignments in Classroom that there is an option to add a rubric.

You have the option to create a rubric directly in Classroom, reuse a rubric from a different assignment (even from a different class!), or import a rubric from a spreadsheet.

Here is a quick visual of how to create the rubric within Classroom:

As you can see, it allows you to add as many criteria and levels as you want. You can opt to add points to calculate a grade for the assignment or turn off points to just use it as a feedback tool where you add your own numerical grade. Note that it defaults to putting your points in Descending order...you can change that if you'd like!

From the student's perspective...when they open your assignment, they will be able to see the rubric immediately and will be able to read more about each of your criteria:

Once the students submit the assignment and it is time for you to review them, you have two choices.

1. You can complete the rubric on the main reviewing page that shows all of the students and assignments on the left side...like so:

2. You can complete the rubric by opening the individual student's assignment (where the other students are listed in a dropdown at the top)...like so:

If you opted to have the rubric calculate the grade, you will see that grade automatically updated as you complete the rubric. Then you can add private comments as you normally would before returning the assignments to the students!

If you would like any help setting up new rubrics or importing rubrics from tables or spreadsheets that you already have, please reach out or schedule time to work with me. It may take a few minutes to set up the first time, but once it's there, you will have access to it forever!
