THIS WEEK IN DIGITAL LEARNING

Creating Video Projects

My educational background is in video production. I have a degree in TV/Radio Production from Ithaca College. I taught a variety of video and digital media courses for 13 years in Manchester and Windham. My job here at LHS is EXACTLY what I want to be doing, but I will always have a place in my heart for creating videos. Like this one I helped the Athletic Leadership Council with earlier this year:

I have been waiting all year to write about a fantastic tool that can help your students demonstrate their knowledge and competence in a more creative and visual way.

WeVideo is an online, collaborative video editing tool that provides students with access to tons of stock footage, photos, music, and sound effects. Original media can also be uploaded from the computer or from Google Drive. Students can then combine all of this material into one polished video!

Which classes could benefit from a video editing tool? In my completely unbiased opinion...all of them! Here are some ideas...I have more. Just ask!

  • Math - Mock news segment on how math was used to solve a real-world problem (or how about recreating the fantastic "Mathnet" of the late 80s/early 90s?)

  • Science - Stop-motion video explaining Newton's laws of motion

  • Social Studies - Public Service Announcement educating and informing viewers about genocide (shout out to LHS World History teachers - they're doing this next week!)

  • English - Original movie trailer based on the student's independent reading book

  • Foreign Language - A sketch showing an interaction between waiter and patron at a foreign restaurant

  • Art - Documentary on a specific artist

  • Music - Drumline music video

  • Business - Commercial for the school store

  • Technology - Demonstration video showing how to properly use a particular piece of equipment

  • Health - Videos designed to teach elementary students about mental health awareness (and then share with the elementary schools!)

  • Phys. Ed. - Workout videos

  • FACS - Cooking competition show

The best way to make any project truly meaningful to students is to distribute it OUTSIDE of the 4 walls of your classroom. Videos are easy to share and students love to watch them. If you choose to do a video project, find a way to get it out there!
