Extending Your Display for Presentations

One of the more common questions I have heard recently has been about how to "extend" your display while connected to a projector rather than mirroring your display. This is great for things like showing videos - you can have the video on the projector while you have something completely different on your laptop screen. I used this feature last week - I had the video on one screen and my notes on the other! Written directions are below, but if you'd prefer to watch a quick video...I made one of those too.

When you connect your laptop to another screen (like a projector, a Smart/Flip board, or a TV), it usually defaults to mirroring your display. To change this, press Windows+P on your keyboard:

Windows P

It will bring up the projection options:

Display settings

Select "Extend."

Once your screen is extended, you will need to move your windows around so everything displays the way you want. Your laptop is the "main" display, so hopefully most of your windows are already there. You are then able to simply drag one of your tabs or windows onto the second display. Sometimes you have to drag to the left and sometimes you have to drag to the right (maybe even up or down!) Your mouse cursor will also jump from one screen to the other. The second display is now an EXTENSION of the first.

If you would like to change the layout so that the second display is exactly where you want it, you can do this by going back into Windows+P and selecting the "More Display Settings" button at the bottom. Then you can move the second display to the location that makes the most sense to you. Make sure to click "Apply."

Hopefully this will help you be more effective and productive while projecting things to your students!
