Just when I thought I was done talking about artificial intelligence for the year...something new came up last week! You may have heard a few different things about something called Khanmigo, which is Khan Academy's AI tool for students and teachers.
The New Hampshire Department of Education is awaiting approval from the Executive Council to sign a contract with Khan Academy that would give 1 year of access to Khanmigo to all students in grades 5-12 across the state. This will be voted on by the Executive Council tomorrow, so stay tuned for more information on that.
Microsoft and Khan Academy partnered to make Khanmigo available for free to all teachers (not students) throughout the United States.
Both of these pieces of news came out at about the same time, so Digital Learning Specialists everywhere have been scrambling to learn more about Khanmigo as it was only available as a paid service before last week! Here's what I have learned:
Khanmigo for Teachers is now free for all educators across the US - just sign up using the link above. It provides a variety of AI tools to help teachers improve workflow, plan, and reach all students. Here is the current list of tools available:
Some of the tools even work directly with Khan Academy if teachers already use that with their students for assignments or practice!
Each tool asks for additional details and then provides you with results in a document that can be edited, downloaded as a pdf, or saved to Google Drive. A lot of these tools are the same types of things you will find in SchoolAI and Brisk Teaching, but it is sometimes nice to try different tools to see which one works best for you.
Khanmigo for Learners is NOT free, but this is what the NH DOE is looking to get for all students in the state for 2024-2025. It is essentially an AI tutor for any subject. It can also help students plan for college or career and can engage in debates with students. It can also provide feedback on student writing. There is no way to explore the tool until it is paid for, so I can't provide much more information than what is available at the link above, but you might be hearing more about it over the summer/in August.
I'm sure there will be plenty of changes when it comes to artificial intelligence in education over the summer - I will do my best to stay informed and to compile plenty of materials for you to start the new school year!
