THIS WEEK IN DIGITAL LEARNING

Why I'm Thankful

Writer's picture: Melissa BrayallMelissa Brayall

I don't have any major news or grand ideas this week. Instead, in honor of Thanksgiving week, I'd like to share an example of why I am thankful for this job.

A few weeks ago, a teacher reached out to me with an idea. She wanted her special education students to open a coffee delivery program for staff. She wanted staff to fill out a Google Form with their order, but she wanted her students to see pictures of the order instead of the text since many of them are not able to read. After a lot of trial and error, a lot of Googling and YouTubing, a lot of talking it out with colleagues, and a little bit of banging my head against the wall...I finally figured out a solution. Now those students are testing out the coffee orders with a handful of staff and it is going great.

I am thankful to have a job where I can spend time helping teachers find solutions to problems that they simply don't have the time to solve. I am thankful to have such creative and innovative colleagues who are willing to reach out for help achieving their goals and doing what is best for students. And I am thankful to have colleagues who always let me talk out my ideas even when they have absolutely no idea what I am talking about.

Examples like this are my favorite thing about this job. So if you ever find yourself in a position where you want to do something, but don't know how...or you think you have a crazy/impossible idea...I would LOVE for you to reach out. Even if it isn't a technology-related question. Remember - I'm a teacher first. I just get really excited about solving problems with innovative solutions and making things easier for everyone. Those solutions don't always involve computers. :)
